Collateral Beauty can be found in the list of top-grossing movies of 2016 because of its huge business on the box office. The movie roams around a grief-stricken advertising executive who finds himself in the depths of despair shortly after the demise of her young daughter.
The academy award winner director and a Harvard graduate, David Frankel, had the honors of directing this movie and the credits for screenplay are owed to Allan Loeb. Starring Will Smith as Howard Inlet, Kiera Knightley as Amy, Kate Winslet as Claire Wilson, Edward Norton as Whit Yardshaw and Micheal Pena as Simon Scott, the cast needs no introduction at all, their names speak volumes for themselves in Hollywood.
Shot in the metropolitan city of New York, Howard, the advertising executive, is a struggling man who suffers to get over the fact that his child has died and finds himself amidst the problems of keeping up his company afloat in business, which his affiliates and colleagues thought he was no more capable of. When it was certain that they had to do something to help their friend and keep their pockets warm, they hire a private investigator, who acts more like a stalker, and gains information on the whereabouts and activities of Howard. It doesn’t take long before they discover that Howard seems to have issues with emotions of love, the domain of time and the abstract reality of death, all three directly correlated to his daughter’s untimely death. This is proven when the investigator gets her hands on the letters which Howard had written for them. Shortly afterwards, Whit gets an insane idea that they should personify the virtual receivers of the letters by hiring actors and make them interact with Howard so that they could film him and digitally remove the actors and prove Howard mentally unstable in front of the board. Meanwhile, Howard starts reluctantly spending time with a group of grievers, who have lost someone special to them, which was headed by a lady named Madeleine. While Madeleine does her part to influence Howard and cure him of his grieves, his friends do their part.
It is not surprising that viewers were not happy to see too many dramatic turns and tear-provoking thoughts throughout the movie when the colleagues are shown to have melodramatic problems of their own, which obviously, to some extent, have overshadowed those of Howard’s. The way the abstracts are directed to act out their roles and their dialogues do not look promising considering the fact that the cast was a highly talented one and was capable of doing much better than they did. It was not expected of Will Smith to feature in such a movie which has so many flaws in the passive sense; screenplay, dialogue delivery and body language. However, just for the sake of witnessing some of the outstanding actors Hollywood has ever produced come together and sculpt out a piece, is certainly not one to miss out on.
